A new report indicates the Australian e-commerce market is dragging three years behind development in the US and UK and must expand.

 

A new report indicates the Australian e-commerce market is dragging three years behind development in the US and UK and must expand.

The Australian eCommerce Market 2010 report was released by research organisation Frost & Sullivan and found while online retail spending in Australia is expected to account for 5 per cent of total retail sales in 2010, only 3 per cent of this business is expected to be initiated in Australia.

The report said the lag in Australian activity comes despite stores like Big W, JB HiFi and Dick Smith launching e-commerce platforms and is a result of insufficient internal support from senior management.

A statement from Frost & Sullivan said more retail chains must make the move in order for e-commerce to be a success.

"Frost & Sullivan suggests the Australian market needs to see the online launch of several chains within the next 12 to 24 months to provide the catalyst for further expansion."

The news comes as City Beach CIO Paul Downs recently spoke to CIO about how he was able to deploy an e-commerce platform in 100 days.
