Minor iPad update could see revised backlight to reduce overheating

Apple could be planning to launch a minor update to the iPad before Christmas, returning to a one-LED backlight in order to reduce the risk of the tablet overheating.

That's according to DigitTimes, which believes that the extra LED in the third-generation iPad has caused an increase in overheating, forcing Apple to remove the additional LED to solve the problem. The report claims that 'sources' have noted that removing an LED will not reduce the luminosity and clarity of the iPad's Retina display.

Also in a bid to tackle the overheating problem, Apple is reportedly planning to improve the iPad's battery. These two changes will also mean that the next iPad will be as light and as thin as the iPad 2.

DigiTimes claims that the upgraded iPad will have indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) panel technology, which will be manufactured by Sharp rather than Samsung.
