Credit card company American Express has appointed Marc Gordon as chief information officer (CIO) and executive VP at the company.

He joins from Bank of America, where he was in the role of enterprise CIO and chief technology officer (CTO).

At American Express, Gordon will lead the company's global technologies business, reporting to Stephen Squeri, group president of global corporate services.

He replaces Toby Eduardo Redshaw, who was CIO at the company from January 2011 to April 2012, according to his LinkedIn profile. Redshaw is now CEO at consultancy Kevington Advisors.

"With 25 years of leadership experience across a range of industries, Marc brings an agile, innovative approach to driving change and leveraging technology to achieve business results," said Squeri.

Gordon added: "I'm excited to join the company at this critical time, as American Express continues to transform the customer experience to better meet the needs of our increasingly digital society."

Previous roles that Gordon has held include CIO of retailers Best Buy and The Timberland Company. He started his career as a consultant at Accenture, after graduating from MIT's Sloan School of Management with a master's degree.

He has also advised government agencies on issues such as national cyber security, and served on the US National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee (NSTAC).

Gordon takes up his new role on 4 September 2012.
