After almost a month's delay, the Acer AC700 Chromebook is now available for order -- and is shipping immediately. The late start, however, probably won't interfere too much with the AC700 catching up to the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook's early sales success. This Wi-Fi-only laptop is $80 cheaper than Samsung's while having similar features.

The Acer AC700 Chromebook is the smaller and lighter of the two new Chromebooks, with an 11.6-inch display instead of Samsung's 12.1-inch screen and about a third of a pound less weight. Our specs comparison for the two notebooks shows they're pretty similar otherwise: an Intel Atom N520 dual-core processor, 2GB of RAM and a 16GB SSD.

Many people, my PCWorld colleague Tony Bradley included, have predicted Google's web-centric notebooks are doomed to fail. Yet, surprisingly, at the beginning of this month the Series 5 topped the Computers and Accessories bestsellers list at Amazon, and it's there now at number 20. It may now be the AC700's turn to try to rise above the sea of tablets.

A 3G version of the AC700 is in the works, but if Wi-Fi is good enough for you and you just can't wait any longer, you can scoop up the AC700 for $349 from Amazon.
